IPTV comes with its own set of terminology that can feel overwhelming at first. This glossary explains the key terms you will encounter when researching, setting up, and using an internet TV service in Ontario.
Core IPTV terms
IPTV (Internet Protocol Television)
Television content delivered over an internet connection rather than through cable or satellite. The IP refers to the same internet protocol that powers websites, emails, and video calls.
M3U / M3U URL
A file format used to define playlists for media players and IPTV apps. Your IPTV provider gives you an M3U URL that, when entered into your IPTV app, loads your entire channel lineup.
Xtream Codes (Xtream API)
An alternative login method for IPTV services. Instead of an M3U URL, you receive a server URL, username, and password. Many IPTV apps support both login methods.
EPG (Electronic Programme Guide)
The on-screen programme guide that shows what is currently on and what is coming up on each channel — the IPTV equivalent of your cable TV guide.
VOD (Video on Demand)
Pre-recorded content you can watch at any time, as opposed to live channels. Many IPTV services include a VOD library alongside their live channel lineup.
Catch-up TV
The ability to watch live broadcasts that already aired, within a set window such as 7, 14, or 30 days after broadcast.
Technical terms
Bitrate
The amount of data transmitted per second during streaming, measured in Mbps. Higher bitrate means better video quality, but also requires more internet bandwidth.
Buffering
When a stream temporarily pauses because the data is not arriving fast enough to play smoothly. Usually caused by a slow internet connection, Wi-Fi interference, or server congestion.
CDN (Content Delivery Network)
A distributed network of servers that delivers content from the location geographically closest to you, reducing latency and buffering.
HLS (HTTP Live Streaming)
Apple's streaming protocol, widely supported across IPTV apps and devices. Many IPTV services deliver streams in HLS format for broad compatibility.
App terms
TiviMate
A popular, premium IPTV player app for Android TV and Firestick. Known for its clean, TV-optimized interface and reliable performance.
IPTV Smarters
A cross-platform IPTV app available on iOS, Android, Android TV, and Firestick. Free to download. Supports both M3U and Xtream Codes login.
Sideloading
Installing an app from outside the device's official app store. Required for some IPTV apps not available in the Amazon App Store.
